Your questions about home physiotherapy
Prescription, CNS coverage, fees, waiting times, areas: all the answers about home physiotherapy in Luxembourg.
Who can benefit from in-home physiotherapy in Luxembourg?
Home physiotherapy sessions are reserved for patients who are unable to move due to their medical condition. A medical prescription detailing the need for home care is mandatory and must be issued by the physician. In addition, the prescription must specify the type of treatment, the number of sessions, their frequency (if necessary), as well as the treatment prescribed. Foreign prescriptions must be written in French, German or English and include all the information required to be processed by the CNS. The standardized prescription template is available on the CNS website.
What conditions are covered by the CNS and how can they be reimbursed?
The coverage rate for physiotherapy costs is generally 70%. A personal contribution may therefore remain your responsibility. With the third-party payment system (when the validation request is sent by a physiotherapist established in Luxembourg), you do not advance the share covered by health insurance. Coverage may increase to 100% in certain situations provided for in CNS, in particular: children under 18 years of age at the time of the prescription; serious conditions of Annex G; certain post-surgical procedures subject to conditions (including a maximum of 32 sessions, 4-month prescriptions and prescription rules); check-ups provided for in the nomenclature; complex perineal rehabilitation of the postpartum (ZK19, maximum 8 sessions per delivery). The maximum number of sessions covered by prescription varies according to the type of treatment: in principle 8 for a common pathology (exceptions for certain acts), 16 for a post-surgical rehabilitation (with specific possibilities up to 32 sessions under conditions), and up to 64 for a serious pathology. What is the validity period of a physiotherapy prescription in Luxembourg?
In order for the sessions to be covered, the prescription must be validated by the CNS. Specifically, you arrange a first appointment with the physiotherapist within 31 days of the prescription being issued, and the validation request must be sent within the same 31-day period. Once the request is in order, the CNS issues a coverage authorization (maximum duration, number of sessions, rate). In addition, sessions performed more than 3 months after the date of the prescription are in principle no longer covered, with exceptions: 12 months for a serious condition (Appendix G); 4 months for certain procedures after surgery on the musculoskeletal system (maximum 32 sessions, subject to prescription and completion times). During the first visit, the physiotherapist collects your prescription and takes care of the transmission to the CNS when the physiotherapist is established in Luxembourg.
